People with iPhones can download apps that teach them how to grow their own fruit and veg, simulate a whoopee cushion or create customised workout programmes to help them get into shape.

But did you know that you can also save money by downloading apps that will help you to manage your money and pay less for everything from calling your bank to eating out? What's more, many of them are free. We've come up with our five favourites to get you started.
1. Vouchercloud App
The free vouchercloud application, run by the website of the same name, delivers hundreds of deals direct to your iPhone, enabling you to save money on trips to the cinema, meals at local restaurants and family days out at the touch of a button.

Deals available through vouchercloud at the moment include 2 for 1 admission to Blue Reef Aquariums in various locations around the country and 50% off main courses at the Zizzi restaurant chain.

Visit the vouchercloud website for more details.

2. 0870 App
This application is offered by the website saynoto0870 and can help you to avoid paying up to 35p a minute to call organisations such as banks and retailers by suggesting normal-rate landline numbers that you can ring instead.

Like the vouchercloud app, it is free of charge. Visit saynoto0870 to find out how to get it.

3. Red Laser App
This app, which is also free to iPhone owners, turns your camera into a barcode scanner that enables you to find out where you can buy groceries and other items most cheaply.

Billed as an "impossibly accurate barcode scanner" it can save you both time and money, and you can find out more about it at the Red Laser website.

4. Petrol Prices App
Rather than driving around your local area checking which service stations are selling petrol most cheaply on any given day, with this app you can find out where the cheapest petrol is available just by touching your iPhone screen.

Run by the website petrolprices.com, the application can check more than 11,000 stations, while searches can be narrowed by either town or postcode.

The app costs £2.99 to download, but with petrol prices rising all the time, it should not take you long at all to recoup this initial outlay. Indeed, it should help an average driver to save hundreds of pounds a year.

Check out petrolprices.com for more details.

5. Account Tracker App
This is just one of a number of applications designed to help users to better manage their incomings and outgoings by enabling you to manage your accounts via your iPhone.

It costs £1.79, but if you are on a budget or are less than perfect at keeping track of your finances, it could save you a lot more than that in the long run.

You can also download a "lite" version for free if you would rather try before you buy. Visit grahamhaley.co.uk for more information.
