Workers to protest over parking fee

Hundreds of workers have planned to take industrial action in protest at being asked to pay an annual levy to park their cars.

The GMB said its members employed by Imperial Tobacco in Nottingham face an annual bill of £288 after the company decided to pass on the cost of the levy, which is being imposed by the city council.

Workers will ban overtime from the end of the month and will work to rule for the first week in May.

GMB official Chris Needham said: "The company is adamant it is going to pass on this workplace car parking levy of £288 a year to its employees. If there is to be a workplace car parking levy, the employers should pay it.

"The council say they want to raise £14 million a year from this levy, which is a straightforward tax on jobs, whoever pays it."

Refuse to pay and take the company and local council to court for unfair dismissal and each case should sue for £15 million. Hit them where it hurts in the pocket. Sue the company as the company is suppose to pay this tax.

these parking charges are really out of hand, these nhs fees are really bad why should people who work at hospitals pay ,and people who have to go to hospital no one wants to go to hospital .this government again is punnishing the poor workers again people cannot afford to go to work with the price of petrol a few years ago the government were going to quash car tax. when all they think about is more tax it doesnt matter about people trying to get by, every one should start rebelling to all these new laws because we are going to end up with no jobs and no money punish the rich , but u cant because they kick off and u will get no backhanders

It's the CITY COUNCIL that is imposing this parking levy, not the government; and the workers at Imperial Tobacco really ought to consider whether working for a purveyor of such a lethal drug is ethical. Their willingness to profit from the suffering and death of others seems hypocritical when compared with the trivial cost of a small daily parking levy.
