Times are certainly tighter so it might seem logical that those in the service industry might suffer somewhat because of the snip on spending. However a recent survey from Click A Taxi shows that it's not the case.

The sea air seems to be having an impact on Brighton residents as they claim the top spot, with 94% likely to leave a tip. Scots dispel stereotypes with Edinburgh nabbing second most generous city and Glasgow also appearing at number four. Oxford and Plymouth take the third and fifth spots respectively.

Best tippers
If you're ever been left on the street waiting for a taxi, it might be something to do with your demographic. The survey found that the best tippers were generally older women. The older you are, the more likely you are to tip with just 8% saying they would never leave a tip. Conversely, this jumps to 50% in the under-24 age range. One of the more surprising results of the survey was tipping relating to employment status - those in full time employment were less likely to tip than their part-time or unemployed counterparts.
To tip or not to tip
The issue of tipping is often a controversial one, particularly while abroad. A survey earlier this year showed that a third of Brits were less likely to tip while abroad or not tip at all.Co-founder of Click A Taxi, Nikolaj Køster, highlights the confusion around the custom:"Tipping is a topic that often sparks debate on who deserves a tip: should we tip only for a good service, shall we tip taxi drivers, hairdressers or when ordering a take out?"
Prime Minister David Cameron made the headlines last year for not leaving a tip while on holidays in Italy with wife Samantha Cameron. Confusing customs played a part in it (there was no waiter service) but those in the public eye are regularly caught out in a media storm for not tipping. More recently, Facebook founder and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg was front page news in May for failing to leave a tip after dining while on his honeymoon in Rome.
