Both recent governments have encouraged competition with courier companies entering the mail delivery service, they have over the years been given permission to operate in a completely different way to that of Royal Mail, furthermore, they were allowed to "cherry pick" the best business customers, then they give the mail to Royal Mail to actually delivery it for them (why should they carry the costs of paying postmen to walk up and down every path in the UK? Why should they pay the costs of sickness, pensions etc when they can leave Royal Mail to carry the costs for them?) Our postman now have been given workloads that are almost impossible to carry out (unless they run the round which is usually 6 - 8 miles) and now they have to drag a golf style trolley with two bags, whilst trying to handle the internet shopping parcels. (They have to share a van because 3 rounds were made into 2 rounds) They are not allowed to leave the sorting office until 9 am unless its a special delivery which means they have to drive it to an address then return to their sorting frame (which puts them behind). They are threatened that they must not return back until all mail is delivered - they are not paid overtime, some postmen are arriving in their own time at 3 and 4 am instead of 6.15am because they can't get the mail sorted in time as their rounds are so large and they are afraid of losing their jobs. Should they have the misfortune of slipping on ice, getting flu in the freezing rain or sickness of any kind twice in 12 months they risk being sacked, well done Royal Mail!!! They stand waiting at doors for people to sign for packages etc, then the public moan if a card is put through the letter box - believe me - your postman does not want to have to carry that parcel with him for the rest of the round! Then there are the customers who take ages to answer the door, your poor postman does not have the time to stand while you all dither around - he has to run!!! Royal Mail has a difficult task, thanks to the government, to be competitive, however, in doing so they have made the postmans job probably one of the worst jobs there is. New staff come and go within weeks - full time staff are replaced with part time staff, loading the long term staff with even more work. They are made to sort the mail faster and faster, they are followed secretly on their rounds by management to see how they secure the mail, where they leave the trolleys etc. (Try dragging a trolley with loaded mail, carrying parcels up and down flights of stairs in flats without lifts) or up long gravel driveways. They are allowed one pair of heavy walking shoes, they walk around with soaked feet, but must wear the uniform shoes, they often have to put the shoes on wet the next morning because they haven't had time to dry out. Sorry, but this is the reality of life for your postman - I know this to be true - I am married to one.

July 21 2012 at 1:56 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy is it now 65% of my outbound post ( I always post 1st class ) is taking between 3 and 5 days for delivery!!
July 20 2012 at 3:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAre you sure that is correct? If you post before the 12am collection the letter should arrive next day by first class. Perhaps you send large letters and fail to pay the correct postage. Where did this 65% figure come from?
July 20 2012 at 3:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBecause most of it is sat in a delivery office due to the fact modernisation is doing very little apart from costing the customer more to post, creating unachieveable deliveries and unrealistic workloads. The Communication Workers Union would not agree to a Monday to Friday 5 day week due to the job losses that it would entail. Unfortunately Royal Mail is no longer the public service and link in the community that it used to be. It is now regarded by the clowns that run it as a business and as we all know all that Royal Mail as a business wants to to is maximise profit at what ever cost.
July 20 2012 at 7:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy does everyone complain about the cost of stamps when postage abroad is far more expensive and far less reliable,we must realize that to keep our universal service Royal Mail must charge accordingly and cannot carry on operating at a loss.
July 20 2012 at 1:06 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down Replydon't know why businesses are complaining, the cost of 'franked' mail didn't go up like the 1st and 2nd class stamps did for normal people. why doesn't someone start a business up franking mail for general public charge a 5p hanling fee it'll still be cheaper than them buying a stamp!
