easyJet planeIt can be confusing buying flights on a budget airline such as easyJet or Ryanair. Even if the initial cost is low - say £20 each way - the amount you pay overall is often several times that.

Why? Because you also pay for 'extras' such as administration and baggage fees.

And despite being slammed for being unclear and confusing, airlines continue to add more and more of these fees to their prices, with the total revenue received from "extras" rising by a massive 66% in the last two years alone.

According to an annual study by aviation consultancy IdeaWorksCompany and technology firm Amadeus, airlines around the world earned an estimated €18.23 billion (£14.23 bn) in "ancillary revenue" during 2011, up from just €11 billion (£8.6 bn) in 2009.

The top 10 worst offenders globally include both Ryanair and easyJet, with the figures showing that easyJet raked in an incredible €890 million (£695m) in "extras" last year, while Ryanair collected some €886 million (£692m) during the same 12-month period.

How much do 'extras' add to the cost of my flights?
The 'extras' fees charged by easyJet include an inescapable £9 'admin fee' for each booking and baggage charges of up to £31 per person for a return flight.

Ryanair's charges, meanwhile, include a £12 'web check-in fee' (even though you will be charged much more if you try to check in at the airport), an unavoidable £6 'admin fee', and baggage charges of between £15 and £40 per person per flight.

How can I avoid paying for 'extras'?
Ways to avoid paying more than you thought for your low-cost airline flights include choosing the right sort of card to make your online payment.

When booking a one-way flight from London to Geneva costing £74.99, for example, you pay a total of £83.99 (including the £9 'admin fee') if you pay with a debit card, but £88.94 if you pay with a credit card.

If you can, it is also sensible to avoid taking baggage that needs to be checked in as this will add a further £11 per bag to the cost.

Don't try to get away with two bags, or a case that does not easily fit into the baggage racks by the check in desks though, as you risk being hit with a much higher charge as you board the aircraft.

Finally, avoid paying for add-ons such as missed flight cover - at £7.50 per person on easyJet - and speedy boarding at a massive £11.50.
