August 29 2012 at 3:08 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyDont forget that not all wealthy people avoid income tax - something like 30% of the entire income tax take comes from the wealthiest 1% of taxpayers. And even those that do avoid paying much tax still pay 20% VAT on things they buy - and most of them buy a lot. They also provide jobs and employ people, and each of those people pays taxes and spends money... We would all be worse off if this govt does drive the wealthy away.

August 29 2012 at 10:13 AM Report abuse Permalink +3 rate up rate down Replyrobert - it was Gordon Brown who arranged that the overseas rich could have " non domicile " status here and pay a maximum of £50K a year in tax - as a result 122000 settled here .
But UK nationals are now moving their money abroad in droves - why would you pay 45% tax here when by moving your money to the Isle of Man or Jersey you only pay 10% maximum .
Screwing the rich is a stupid policy that simply makes the rest of us poorer when they move their money overseas - collecting 40% of something is a lot better than the current 62% of nothing . we used to charge 83% - practically nobody paid it , they moved their money abroad, they lowered taxes, money returned and now the richest 5% pay more than half the tax collected - you can't MAKE the rich " stay and pay " but you can encourage them to do so - the " politics of envy " simply make the poor poorer and cost jobs
but they don't pay 45% they still send their money to the isle of man or jersey giving them a tax break just gives them more to squirrel away.
August 29 2012 at 11:16 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate downHe says that he doesn't want to drive away the rich. They can leave whenever they like as they have the financial means to live anywhere of their choosing. Unlike the majority of us who are just cannon fodder for his guns, constantly being shot at by his policies to remove as much of our money from us as possible. This is regardless of our ability to feed ourselves or our children. God forbid that we should take an extra 10p in tax off someone who earns 20 times the minimum wage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 29 2012 at 10:01 AM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down Replydont drive away conservative voters he means
August 29 2012 at 9:45 AM Report abuse Permalink +4 rate up rate down ReplyHad Mr Osborne listened and done sensible measures we would not be in a state of emergency. One of the worst waste of police ambulance and casualty is Booze, had he put £1.00 tax on spirits, 50p on wine and 25p on cans we would not have had to be so cruel with Disabled people the poor or the Elderly. He should exempt pubs.
He could have added Council tax to wages and benefits and sold off the c/tax buildings, no more arrears no more Court time and millions in arrears could pay a fixed amount to clear debts. He could have introduced a dog licence which would help to stop cruelty. There were so many things he could have done and should stop this ATOS cruelty as the BMA agrees. What really suprises me is that Osborne and Cameron were ETON educated, I was secondry modern and could have cleared the Debt with sensible ideas. What the hell does this say for Eaton ??
All we get are pathetic ideas that cost more than save. Why use a French firm to assess benefits. we need the jobs , sod giving money to the french. Mr Osborne needs to cut 50% of MPs in the commons all claiming expenses for travel, meals. Their is no need to have a third party only the winners and runners up. Out of these only those that the days business affects should be present.
Lords reform was right to cut them by 50% as its heaving and Why ??? money, expenses, half fal asleep its pathetic.
Not one Disabled , Elderly or poor person caused this debt, unfortunatelly they are paying and some with their lives. Cant Osborne realise that 1 in 100 babies are born Disabled and a bably born every minute. This man needs to resign along with greyling and Ian Duncan Smith. We need a chancellor who knows what he is doing and GEORGE your a failure. .........My last remark is this, If any libdem is allowed to join Labour, I will vote UKIP, There is millions to be saved in imigration. I agree below if i had money i would quit this broken britain without a second thought.
Mr Clegg represents a more and more socialist view of tax collection as he nudges ever closer to labour.
He wants to continue in a coalition government, regardless of the policies. He does not focus on the needs of the nation to have a strong economy.
Export more, import less, reduce state spending, create blockbuster products - all escape him. Plays tit for tat with conservatives like a 5 year old. I'm not saying others are necessarily any better, but in his position you expect him to have solutions for big issues. Increasing taxes on the so called rich is a political gesture, it won't raise much. Just keep them here and VAT, their employees and their spending power will earn the Treasury far more.
Reality is that his contributions are shallow, trivial and together with Mr Cameron, coalition leadership is weak. Add Mr Osborne, the governor of BoE and I get the feeling that absolutely nothing is being done to help the economy or to reduce debt. Mr Clegg wake up!
