Funeral Directors charges seem an awful lot of money when viewed in terms of POUNDS paid, BUT, if you look at their charges (excluding Council Charges) Funeral Costs today are less than they were at any time in the last 60 years, in terms of average earnings to cost of the funeral.
What has gone up SIGNIFICANTLY is the charge by Councils for THEIR Burial and Cremation services, I recently had a funeral in Cardiff and the cost of a grave was around £1300 including the Council charge for digging it. In 1979 the Cost was £35 YES thirty five pounds....the Funeral Company charged £250 for all THEIR services then, the same Company £2395 this time around. So the Council costs went up around 4000% and the undertaker around 1000% For what they do, I think undertakers are pretty reasonably priced.
It was pointed out to me by my undertaker that people do not HAVE to use them, they can do it themselves if they want, no law is stopping them, but unlike what I saw with Muslim funerals on the TV last night (dead good job), I do not think many of us want a shambolic send off.
I would not want to do their job in a million years regardless of how much I was offered.
Other than a few rogue operators I think Undertakers are good value, provide an excellent caring service AND like most areas of life, you USUALLY get what you pay for. A cheap funeral is usually EXACTLTY that, a cheap service, a typical priced funeral is usually excellent and good value for money. An expensive funeral is normally of the same standard, BUT WITH AN EXPENSIVE casket, that is a rectangular shaped casket not a traditional shaped coffin.
This report on pricing doesnt tell the whole story.
As for tonys question.
That raises another issue as to why funearls cost more than we like, PERHAPS many people dont pay and those of us who are decent honest and hardworking SUBSIDISE them the same way as we do Council Tax , Benefits and so on.
I guess we'll just have to live forever!
