I am afraid youth unemployment is bound to increase, every year there are more school leavers looking for employment and we are scraping the bottom of the barrel to find people proper full time jobs(not just part time employment that pay a pitence) on top of that we must find jobs for all our overseas imports, not just from the EU but from countries I have never heard of looking for work(or pay them benefits) We had better hope that the economies of Spain (50% of youngsters don,t have jobs) don,t collapse all together because under EU law they can look for work here in the UK, and If they come here flat broke which they will,we are obliged to provide housing and benifits, isn,t the EU wonderful, but not if you live right here in the good old UK.

October 15 2012 at 9:48 AM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyI think the Term they should use for those aged between 18 to 24 yr's of age should be Young Adult, and NOT Youth which is more in tune with someone being between the ages of around 12 to 16 years of age.

October 15 2012 at 9:47 AM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyIn the 1970's & 80' s company's where given a grant to employ a qty of people also grants to train young people , also most if not all schools had mettlework / woodwork , cooking classes when we lft school at least we hade the basic skills of engineering , carpentry, and able to cook. WHY CANT WE DO IT NOW. ?????????
October 15 2012 at 9:36 AM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyYes indeed, you are Right we did have 6 to 12 Month's Government Training Courses, and Schemes back in the mid - 1970's, I remember this only too well since the vast majority of those so-call Crash - Courses in Building Trades Professions made such a Cock - Up once they were On the Job, that many were NOT Employable unless they became Self - Employed giving birth to the phase Cowboy - Builder's.
It was really NO WONDER that many of these Government Training, and Crash - Courses never Worked back then, when trying to cover what was Training originally for an Apprenticeships covering 5 to 7 years, squashed into 6 to 12 month's.
Youth unemployment is on the rise but so is the amount they are spending on new i-phones, booze, cigarettes and holidays!
So where is their money coming from and what is their incentive to go work for it when they are getting it for doing nothing?
OK, so you cut back on paying State Benefit's, so that our youth's cannot afford to buy new i-phone's, booze, cigarettes, etc; all of which REDUCES Sales within these Sector's, and creates MORE Unemployment.
So therefore, where do you think any MORE additional Employment places will be found with even less demand, on top of an already REDUCTION in real Job's that are currently, NOT THERE???
No surprises there then. Wait a little while and the fabricated fall in the unemployment figures fall apart for a while and REAL unemployment figures escape momentarily. Take BAE for example. The German and French governments insisted that their workers were protected. Our government? Not a dickie bird! They couldnt care less about their own workers losing their jobs so long as they cashed in themselves. Typical political lies that following the failure of that take over our peoples jobs are in danger. They were anyway!! It doesnt take Einstein to calculate that if you have (lets make a silly figure up like parliament does) 30 jobs with 50 nationals applying for them that some will be out of work. Now add in another 70 mass immigration figures particularly the illegals and it become absolutely impossible to reduce unemployment among our own young. Then that is perhaps why big business and parliament dont want to control immigration?
October 15 2012 at 8:09 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt is NOT Immigration that will cause UK Unemployment to get worse, it is EEC Legal Migrant's that are travelling across, and around Europe that pose the biggest threat to UK Job's, for just imagine what will happen should some of the Spanish 50% plus of youths Unemployed, or some of the Long - Term 25% Long - Term, and rising Spanish main stream Adult population also decided to seek Employment in their droves in the UK.
Beside Spain, we may also full well have to contend with other European Countries like Greece, and Portugal, when MORE People again Unemployed will seek Europe over for a Job - Vacancy, while Employer's will pay the least in Wages possible for their Services.
So while we already have many foreign EEC Worker's in the UK, this problem will surely grow in number once there is ANY Upturn in the UK's Economy.
Bronco, I think you need to look up "immigration" in your dictionary if you think that Spanish people coming to the UK would not be immigrants... But really immigraton is not the problem here, its a combination of many of our youths not having the rights skills and attitude to be employable, and the state making it too easy for them NOT to work.
October 15 2012 at 9:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot having the right skills and qualifications??? Where have you been for the last ten years??
They were ACTIVELY encouraged by both political parties to get the best education they could; that's why many opted for degrees and having got degrees, now find themselves in debt with very little prospect of getting a job in their preferred field. And please don't bother going on about shortages in engineering or medecine when Bae systems made loads of well experienced, how shall we say, slightly older employees redundant and you are supporting massive cuts is welfare, which wilol include the NHS, no matter what spin they try to put on it!!!
Sheppey.
No, I think you need to understand that all EEC Nationals ( Migrant's ) can freely come to the UK, and seek Employment, whereas Immigrant's ( meaning those from out with the EEC ) have to abide by different Legislation.
This is one Issue that really makes my blood boil, for however much this matter of Youth Unemployment comes around almost now every month, nothing is being done by the useless Coalition about this Issue.
The problem is, and has been all along the lack of Job's within the UK's Job's - Market, both for the Mid, to Long - Term, for all the while MORE People stay on in Employment after reaching the statutory State Pension Age of 65 for Men, and somewhere between 61 to 65 soon for Women, then this retaining of Working past the State - Retirement Age will see a much further rise in Youth - Unemployment which will well exceed expectations.
The "ONLY" Answer to a general shrinkage in the UK's Job's - Market which has seen a boom in Part - Time, and Casual Work is to reduce the State - Retirement Age in the UK down to 60 years of age, thereby allowing those whom may wise to take their State - Retirement at 60 to do so, thereby freeing up a Job within the Employment - Chain for "New" Entrances.
Otherwise, to do nothing and further allow the current Jobless between 18 to 25's to languish even longer within the Unemployment Cycle, will severely hit the UK Job's - Market in future years to come, for unless this Coalition Government bites the bullet and starts to realise that there should be Employment for our Younger - Generation AFTER being in all manners of Education, as those currently reaching 60 years of age cannot go on Working for ever.
The madness in all this is, that the Age at which you are now expected to start Work is rising with many reaching 25 years of age and still awaiting for their first break of a Full - Time Job, while the age of State - Retirement is also rising, which in turn goes right back to making our Younger - Generation wait even longer past their 25th birthdays before they can ( if they are lucky enough ), to find Skilled - Training, and Employment.
All this is happening at the same time as we are paying our Younger - Generation to either become Unemployed, or to go on turn - style Training - Course that DON'T find them any Employment, when this money wasted could be transferred into paying for early State - Retirement at 60, while our Younger - Generation could be in Employment filling up the Job's vacated by those reaching 60 a long time before reaching their 25th birthdays.
With the Global - Recession now expected to last for between the next 7 to 10 plus years, then as the UK 's Job's - Market will only become MORE tighter, then if nothing is done to get our youth adults into Work then many will spend a life - time Unemployed, as the older anyone gets then the harder it becomes to learn a Trade, or get use to getting up and going out to Work, while those over 60 will struggle to do many Hard Work, and Labour intensive Trades after reaching 60, since many are finding that they are knackered doing Heavy Manual Work in their 50's.
This current useless Coalition Government will now have to WAKE UP, and do something positive.
Well said, I should have been retireing next January at 60 but now have to go an extra 2 yrs +, retireing age should be coming down inline with other european countries not going up
October 15 2012 at 9:05 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI agree; you cannot realistically expect anyone who has been involved in manual work, now approaching what was the retirement age to continue working for another two or three years; it is preposterous; it's all very well for this government to impose this legislation as they will retire very comfortably thank you very much; with, in many cases income from other business activities. You can hardly claim an MPs work is arduous can you??
I'll repeat what I have said before; the public should be asking a far more fundamental question: where all our public tax-payers money has been misappropriated over the last thirty plus years - I bet they wouldn't want to be forced into answering that one!!! The whole system has gone completely wrong; youngsters at one end of the scale trying to secure work and those in their late 50s or early 60s having to work longer to get less pension.
Hiring is simple. How much money will the new employee make? I accept that young inexperienced people need training, but if their education and attitude suggest less than an enthusiastic competent work ethic, then I never hired them.
I am not being critical of teachers, because I did find within the mass of inadequate applicants real talent.
Young people need a vibrant cv, brimming with hobbies and. Interests that prove they are 'having a go' and are good at something legal, decent and honest.
They can all do great things and when they go job seeking you do want to see a spark there.
Get them to complete the following sentence: I can make a profit for the company because .........
No wonder - just look at many of the youth of today - far too many are unemployable due to awful standards of education. This makes it difficult enough for them, but when they have to compete for jobs against Eastern Europeans who often have very good educations then its little wonder so many are unemployed. Blame the schooling system and their parents.
