Work appraisals 'a waste of time'

They do indeed have no practical benefit whatsoever, and in fact waste many thousands of hours each year in the public sector (equating to a massive loss in revenue). A reasonable idea, but only that.

Make the employee fill in the appraisal form and self score. Then you can agree or disagree. Easy, fast AND ultimately agreement. Discovered and used system in Califirnia. Moved it over to Eu and UK.
Staff were far more honest than I initially gave them credit for.

The employee should be given the opportunity to decide if they want or need an assessment or not. It’s great in theory by theorists but in practice it’s a burden on the employee and employer and can be divisive.

Tick boxes are a disater and intellectually unacceptable. if you want to get things done, you let people use their talents. A tick box system takes a hawk and shoves it into a corn flake box. A sysstem based on using the talent of people and tailoring the job to that lets the hawk fly free.

Appraisals are increasingly a waste of time. They are too often now designed to ensure that the employee can never achieve a pay rise for performance or achieve any targets (deliberately set beyond the possible) to save money (unless you are lucky enough to be the Blue Eye Boy/Girl or related to someone important). Equally since the concept once revolved around Performance Related Pay. How does anyone justify the enormous pay scales/rises, and mammoth pension bonus pots attained by big business heads, and the heads of major financial institutions when they consistently lose their businesses, their shareholders, workers, and ultimately the country, billions of pounds through poor planning, practice, and some might suggest highly questionable dealings?

if the senior management are competent they don't need an appraisal policy ,they will know peoples caperbilities and already have the right people doing the right jobs

IT IS A PERIOD OF TIME TO TALK TO SOMEONE WITHOUT BEING DISTRURB IT CAN BE SOCIAL AS WELL AS A TIME FOR BOTH PARTIES TO DISCUSS ANTHING I FIND IAM SO BUSY UNLESS TIME IS PUT A SIDE PROBLEMS FESTER FORGET THE HIGH AND MITY APPROACH MAKE IT FAIR ANF FREINDLY STAAFF DESERVE IT

My husband, a retired school teacher of thirty plus years once told a headmaster, in defence of his colleagues, that he was killing people with his expectations. He suffered, big style, as a result. Too many young people, these days, are being exploited to the whims of those who profess to be their mentors in leading them forward, when all these people care about is their own agenda.

There is more to leadership than killing the passion in people through management's conception of that which has to be done.

Don't burn them out, give them space and time to travel and learn, that way they will become much better leaders. Remember that the young are our future, so teach them and teach them well.

Now retired,but must confess as a Manager they tended be used not so much as a personal development tool but a means to get individuals to set themselves targets which would be expected to be achieved.
The buzz word was empowerment, which sounds good and staff thought they had some sort of control.
Very few would criticise managers becuase of the damage it would do.

I work for an American owned large company and we have to put up with these three times a year. I know this is just a box ticking exercise for the HR department, as there is a note on the final part that states "signing of this document does not indicate acceptance or agreement, but that the process has taken place"
