Why do 60 year olds that are still at work get winter energy payments, should this not start at the time that one leaves work for good, the same with the bus pass yes this is a good thing but why at 60 when one is still at work.
December 01 2012 at 11:04 AM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyI`m 83 yrs old, have worked hard all my life running my own business and retired at 73. I dont need the winter fuel payment and have made this quite clear to those that keep sending it to me but unfortunately they don`t listen. So every time I receive the payment now, I go out to my local Asda store and spend it all on food which I then make up into hampers for those in the village where I live who are less fortunate than me. I have been doing this since my retirement and Asda got to hear about it, so now they donate food as well. All in all it brings a little happiness into someone else`s life and thanks to Asda we can now be certain none of the other pensioners in our village will ever go without in winter.

November 12 2012 at 7:58 PM Report abuse Permalink +7 rate up rate down ReplyPensioner talking. I would honestly prefer the money fed starving anywhere in the world. I am in no way a saint (no chance!) or of a martyr mentality but Id rather put on an extra coat and have the money used where people die for lack of food or medicine. I'n not interested in the politics of it. If I had the power I would add to it all the money people spent on 'gifts' for their pets too. If you cant see that human lives come before cats and dogs then you are socially and biologically disfunctional.

November 12 2012 at 12:32 PM Report abuse Permalink +15 rate up rate down Replywilliamsmitho8 - we legally have to send 0.7% of our GDP in Overseas Aid - this money cannot legally be diverted here - Gordon Brown signed us up to this in 2004 - all we can vary is which countries we send it to - eg stop giving it to India and give it to Yemen or Sudan or Kenya or wherever - but we can't vary the amount in total.
