Steve Harris, the multi-millionaire bassist with Iron Maiden, is selling his rock star mansion in Essex. So what do you get for £6.75 million?

And do you need this kind of cash for a home with rock connections?

The property

The Daily Mail has revealed that a seven bedroom house on the market near Harlow in Essex - with some very distinctive features - is actually the home of Harris - one of the band's founders.

The estate agents list some of the more unusual features. There's a football pitch - complete with changing rooms, and a striking indoor pool surrounded with murals which could easily have been lifted from an Iron Maiden album cover.

It comes complete with the recording studio and cinema room that are part of every rock star's list of basic necessities. There are also seven bedrooms, with three shower rooms, two bathrooms, and five reception rooms.

The style is an interesting choice. The Grade II nature of the building means that parts are unspoiled, galleries or timbered rooms with plenty of traditional character. Others reflect more individual taste, such as the room designed as a pub (where his daughter Lauren is pictured above), and the somewhat striking pool.

The estate agents refer to it as "full of character and period features throughout." A spokesman told the Daily Mail: "Some houses in this price bracket can be a bit dull but this place is rather refreshing - it certainly isn't run-of-the-mill."

How much?

If you have a few million burning a hole in your pocket is may appeal. But do you need to be a multi-millionaire to live in a home with rock connections?

The entry level for major names appears to be around the two million mark. In December, Amy Winehouse's three-bedroom house in Camden was auctioned for £1.98 million - it was something of a snip for the buyer after the home originally went on sale for £2.7 million.

For roughly the same sum (£2 million) you could buy a home with both a rock star connection and an altogether sweeter one. The six bedroom Cotchford Farm in East Sussex was both the childhood home of Christopher Robin, and the former home of Brian Jones from the Rolling Stones, who was famously found dead in the pool there.

And for a reported £2.25 million you could have a look at Robbie William's LA mansion (again with its own football pitch) on Mulholland Drive.

If this is a bit of a stretch, you may be better off with the childhood home of one of your idols.
Madonna's four bedroom childhood home just outside Detroit hit the headlines in spring last year when it sold for £57,000. Admittedly it had been empty for years before that after suffering a fire, but it's a slice of history for less than the price of a super-car.
