I am always baffled by retail. Profits are down they say. How can they expect sales to increase year on year when people have less disposable income due to many essentials increasing beyond belief and wages/pensions falling in real terms. We have less so cannot spend more .
January 10 2013 at 6:59 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHave been an M&S shopper these last thirty years and am clothed almost entirely in Marks clothes. However - have watched the company go from great to less than good.
Why?
All their clothes used to be made in The UK. Today none are. All are imports. M&S food used to be of the highest quality. Thats right - used to be. M&S employees used to be treated and paid well. Anyone you speak to in Marks will tell you the same. Salaries and bonuses cut. Staff morale at an all time low. Marks have lost their way and have forgotten who their customes is.
Can this be turned around. Yes - and quite simply. Take a look at Waitrose/John Lewis. Sheer quality with the most helpful of staff. Paid well and keen to treat customers properly. Prices are a little more - yes because customers are prepared to pay for better quality.
M&S - hope you read this.
Couldn't agree more. M&S turned their back on good British manufacturers in favour of far east sweat shops that the cheaper end of the high street produce and sell. Result, a drift away from M&S like me also. High prices for inferior items, poor staffing levels, poor changing facilities. Marc Boland good when at Morrisons on food. Knows didly sqat about clotthes.
