Nine out of 10 young people are still receiving financial support from their parents, a survey has shown.

Around 87% of 18 to 25-year-olds still get money from their parents, with 41% receiving help with their day-to-day living costs, according to the Children's Mutual.

One in four young people are given money towards their rent, while 28% have received help with funding higher education.

Parents are also handing over cash for more frivolous things, with 19% of young people letting their parents pay for holidays and trips abroad.

But despite receiving handouts, two-thirds of young people getting help from their parents still think they are completely financially independent.

Opinium Research questioned 1,000 18 to 25-year-olds during December.

Is it any wonder that children now require more support than ever from their parents? The cost of getting qualifiations, thanks to the Government tax on education i,e. the Student Loan is the biggest cause of financial strain and persons leaving collleage before te completion of their course. The average student leaves even Further Education without a debt less than £4000; with those in Higher Education to Degree level, that may be as high as £10.000. This is yet a futher example of the Government wanrting a dumbed down society. In the days of a proper curriculum and challenging courses such qualifications meant something. Now that we have a statistic mentality to everything, passing means more than qualification. Employers are not interested in educated people anyway; they want button pushers. Little wonder that monied parents are so important to a student's education. The less the parent(s) earn the less likely the child is able to sustain educttion
