It was always going to be a difficult Budget for Darling to come up with, but given the tough situation we are in economically, we at Moneymagpie expected some more impressive measures. However, there were some announcements that will make a difference (for good and bad) to the lives of many people in the UK in the next year or so.

Here are the main points for you to keep in mind:

If you're a pensioner...

...there's some good news in that the basic state pension will go up by at least 2.5%; the Winter Fuel Allowance will be kept at the higher level of £250 for over-60s and £400 for the over-80s; the Pension Credit Allowance will be raised from £6,000 to £10,000 from the end of this year. Oh, and grandparents of working age (there are more and more of those) will be able to count caring for children as payments towards basic state pension.

If you're a higher earner...

...you're losing out - pension tax relief will be restricted from April 2011 for those earning over £100,000 so get as much cash in your pension as you can in the next two years; there will be a new tax bracket of 50% for people earning more than £100,000 a year from April next year; there will be no personal tax allowances for people with incomes of more than £100,000 (so get talking to your accountants about how you can avoid tax in other ways).

If you're a child...

...the government is trying to help - the child element of Child Tax Credit will be raised by £20 from April next year so that will help mummy and daddy cope with the ever-increasing food prices; there will be an extr £100 a year to trust for disabled children and £200 for severely disabled children.

If you're a saver...

...it's good news as the ISA limit has been raised to £10,200....well, good news except that it won't come in until next year unless you're over 50 in which case you can take advantage of it from October this year.

If you're unemployed...

...and young (i.e. under 25) you could get some training (if you're willing to take it). Also, statutory redundancy pay will go up from £350-380 a week.

If you're hoping to buy a house/flat...

...make sure it's a cheap one - the Stamp Duty holiday has been extended for properties under £175,000.

If you're into your vices...

...give them up - booze and fags are going up by 2% immediately.

If you're a British citizen...

...brace yourself. Government debt is going up and is going to continue to rise...who will have to pay it down? Us of course, over the next few years. Happy days...
