If you are looking for a rare or unusual item then eBay is a good place to start searching.
But whatever you are on the hunt for, you can be assured that someone is on the trail of something even more unusual. A wide array of weird and wonderful (and sometimes plain creepy) items are being sold - and bought - on eBay around the world at all times.

Buy your council house!
It is currently only a proposal by the Government, and has not yet happened, but some MPs believe that that people should be able to buy council houses on eBay!

They hope to use eBay to promote the Right to Buy scheme, saying it will be a boost to 'digital engagement'. It would also be welcome news for eBay who will stand to make a packet in fees. MPs obviously aren't too concerned about the lost revenue this might mean for them due to eBay's apparent reluctance to pay Corporation Tax in the UK!

Human traffic
In 2009 a young girl made the news when she tried to sell her "annoying but cuddly" grandma on eBay. Granny's stock was doing pretty well, with plenty of bids coming in, until eBay withdrew the lot as it contravened its policy on human trafficking.

Another couple's strange idea of a joke backfired when they put their baby up for sale on eBay for €1. Funnily enough social services didn't find it so amusing, and the child was taken into care while investigations were carried out.

Free vouchers
There are plenty of vouchers that can be clipped free from newspapers and magazines up for sale on eBay.

Fast food discount vouchers for McDonalds, Burger King and KFC are popular and they generally sell pretty well. A few days ago a bunch of ten free meal vouchers for McDonals (cut from a newspaper) were sold for £1.64 (ten bids were placed) with £1.69 delivery! It may only amount to around £3 profit after postage, but if you sell enough of them it can add up.

Buyers take note: these vouchers are available for free all over the place! You can also get great deals and discounts off food by following our Frugal Food blog which comes out each Friday.

Make-up and perfume samples
There is good money to be made from selling samples - often handed out for free in department stores. There is also a market for the freebies stuck to the fronts of some glossy magazines, like mascara and lipstick.

Perfume samples can sell for around £1, but some brands see tiny 1ml vials going for around £5! Also, despite health and safety concerns, there is a market for used cosmetics with a 'pre-loved', half-finished MAC foundation selling for around £18 a bottle at the time of writing!

A single cornflake?
In 2004 a Coventry student made the news by selling a single cornflake for £1.20. The BBC reported that the student was surprised to get this sum, but that sadly he was unable to profit from his odd experiment as eBay made him withdraw the cornflake for having no 'Best Before' date on it.

Or a sprout?
He's not the only one to try this bizarre scheme. Another eccentric Brit sold a single Brussels sprout that he had cooked on Christmas Day for an impressive £99.50 (the money went to charity).

1p
1p is worth 1p, right?

However, for coin collectors the right penny can fetch a much higher price. There are plenty on eBay of a specific vintage or mint going for £1 or more (with express, next day delivery on top for £6.50, rocketing the price even higher).

But, there is also a market for the dull, well-worn 30-year-old pennies, sold en masse. This is because the metal content of these coins is worth more than their face value. Older coins are more sought after though as new pennies are mostly made of zinc, and contain very little copper. Any penny from 1981 or earlier is 95% copper.

Your life
A UK man living in Australia made the press worldwide when he auctioned his life for the grand total of £192,000. For this price you got all his worldly goods - his home, his belongings, his jet ski, motorcycle, car and even his job (although his boss may not have been entirely on board with that one).

The man had recently been through a divorce and decided to leave his past behind in a dramatic fashion - such a dramatic fashion that Disney bought the rights to produce his story!

Human organs
The list of people waiting for organ donations is growing daily and many take desperate measures to try to secure one.

And where there is demand there are those waiting to profit. A man from Florida auctioned his liver on eBay and received a number of bids. The bidding actually reached $5.7 million before eBay cancelled it and removed the posting due to its policy against the sale of human organs on the site.

Political 'memorabilia'
It's not just current MPs who are interested in eBay. A few weeks ago website Tamebay (a great source of advice and information for eBay buyers and sellers) reported that ex-MP Andrew Mitchell was planning to sell the instrument of his downfall - the infamous 'Plebgate' bike - on eBay.

It sold for a massive £10,600 but this sum did not go into Mr Mitchell's personal coffers. It was kindly donated to a Kenyan Aids charity.

Supermarket chain Sainsbury's will look to boost its fashion credentials this week with the launch of a new look for its clothing brand Tu.

The grocer is currently the UK's seventh largest clothing business by volume, having taken Tu from a standing start in 2004 to record sales of £680 million last year.

In the biggest investment in its clothing business since Tu's launch, it is promising trend-led collections created by a 30-strong in-house design team who will add new "seasonal must-have" items every six weeks.

The new look, which has been created to inspire customers to "Live Their Style", will be rolled out to 395 stores nationwide by this autumn. The new autumn/winter range will include leather handbags from £35, lambswool jumpers from £20 and an oversized women's cocoon coat for £50.

James Brown, Sainsbury's clothing director, said the investment was part of Sainsbury's wider corporate strategy to grow its non-food business and further diversify its revenue and profit streams.

He added: "After an outstanding performance over the past couple of years it's the right time for a significant investment in the brand."

The co-founder of online marketplace notonthehighstreet.com said childcare issues continued to hamper women in business as she was recognised with an MBE.

Mother-of-two Sophie Cornish launched the internet company seven years ago from her kitchen table with fellow entrepreneur Holly Tucker, 35, and the firm now supports more than 3,500 of Britain's small businesses.
The pair spoke of their delight as they were honoured for their work but called for more support for women who struggle to pursue their careers while raising children.

Mrs Cornish, 47, said "so much more" could still be done to support small firms in Britain.

"I think it's so important," she said. "They are phenomenal, these businesses, they truly are the backbone of the economy and the shining lights of this country and we've tried to do our bit but we really need to make sure everybody is making sure that they are truly showcased in the way that they should be.

"A lot of it is about financial support. I am personally very conscious that 95% of our businesses are women. For us, when we launched and indeed for many of them, the greatest issue is simply childcare. Amazing entrepreneurs with amazing ideas being hampered by such a basic practicality seems crazy."

Mrs Cornish said launching the web business was "not easy" but added: "You do the best you can, there is no real work-life balance, of course there isn't, but I think it's about making sure you're comfortable with the way you're doing it, knowing that you are doing it for the right reasons, for your family and your business, and then get on with it."

The entrepreneur, who lives in Teddington, west London, with her husband Simon, 47, and children Ollie, 16, and Honor, 14, described her accolade as a "testament" to the company's small business partners.

She added: "It was a highly emotional moment when I received my letter, not least because when I ran upstairs to show my husband, his eyes welled up with tears. It really is a dream come true and we are so particularly touched to be recognised in this way.

"We have always felt so privileged to have the best job in the world, growing our company and championing small businesses across Britain and abroad. Seven years ago, when we launched notonthehighstreet.com, we hardly dared imagine that we would now be supporting over 3,500 small businesses."

The Avios scheme allows members to build up points to spend on a range of rewards from days out to flights.

There are a variety of ways of boosting your points, so it's worth understanding your options.
The rewards available include days out, experiences, Eurostar travel, Disneyland Paris trips, travel insurance and car hire. But the points can also be used to cut the price of flights and flight upgrades, which can be booked with seven leading airlines including Flybe, American Airlines, Air Malta, Iberia, Monarch, Aurigny and British Airways.

Avios divides the world into nine geographical zones with each costing a specific number of points. You need between 9,000 and 30,000 to get around the globe.

So let's take a look at how you can rack up the points to make it happen.

Exchange Tesco Clubcard vouchers

Your Tesco Clubcard vouchers can be exchanged for Avios points, and you can get 600 Avios for every £2.50 in Clubcard vouchers you receive. So to get 9,000 Avios, which is enough to get you a return flight to over 40 destinations in Europe, you will need to exchange 15 £2.50 Clubcard vouchers. You can do this manually or get your vouchers automatically exchanged when your statement is produced.

Refuel at Shell

Another loyalty scheme you can use to build up your Avios pot is the Shell Drivers' Club. Motorists can get an Avios points boost if they refuel at Shell garages with their Shell loyalty card.

Registering the card online and opting into the Avios rewards can get you 50 bonus Avios. Then each time you refuel just swipe and collect points which can be converted into Avios every three months.
You get one Shell point per litre of Shell Regular fuel and two points for every litre of Shell V-Power fuel. Every 20 litres you will have enough Shell points for ten Avios points and until the 3rd of July you can get double points.

Recycle old gadgets

You can get extra points if you recycle your old gadgets with Avios Recycling. My old iPhone 4 16GB mobile is currently worth 11,000 Avios if it's in good working order or 5,000 if it has a fault.

As well as phones you can recycle games consoles, digital cameras, laptops, tablets, MP3 players and satnavs. You get a freepost address label and a jiffy bag to post your goods if you're happy with what the site can offer. The Avios points get added to the account within 30 days of the company receiving the device.

Shop via the eStore

The Avios eStore enables you to rack up points when you use it to shop online. It works just like a cashback site. You just click through to a retailer and make purchases as normal, but get rewarded with Avios instead of cash.

The Avios eStore has hundreds of retailers to choose from like John Lewis, Whistles, Argos, Selfridges, B&Q, Sky, BT, Ticketmaster, Topps Tiles and House of Fraser. Purchases are tracked when you click through to the retailer's website and go through with a transaction. Avios are normally paid into your account within 35 days.

Each retailer will offer a certain number of Avios per £1 spent or a lump sum. At the moment you can get eight Avios for every £1 you spend with Groupon, Harrods, Interflora, Selfridges and Charles Tyrwhitt. But shopping at O2 via the eStore will get you 5,000 Avios while using the Carphone Warehouse to purchase a deal will give you 1,000.

Give your opinion

You can earn Opinion Points by completing surveys, which you can turn into Avios. But to become an e-Rewards member you have to be invited. To be in with a chance you need to register an interest first and get on the waiting list. Invitations for surveys are sent out every three months. The number of surveys you complete and the number of Opinion Points you receive depends on the size of each survey.

Use air mile credit cards

A great way to boost your Avios points balance is to take advantage of air mile credit cards. These usually have great introductory offers that can provide a big points boost.

There are four credit cards offering Avios points at the moment. Lloyds TSB has two Avios credit accounts, which each come with an American Express and a MasterCard to collect points. Both these accounts are linked with the central Avios scheme.

Elsewhere there are two American Express British Airways cards, which earn Avios via the British Airways Executive Club. This is a seperate scheme for frequent flyers but the Avios accrued here can be transferred to the central scheme later.

Earn on travelling

You can pick up extra Avios if you are a frequent flyer with British Airways or Iberia and their partners. It's a bit confusing but these airlines have separate programmes where members can earn Avios when flights or products from other partners are purchased.

The frequent flyer programmes are good for those who are likely to travel a lot, while the central Avios scheme is better for those that don't regularly travel and can collect points in other ways. But if you sign up to the frequent flyer programmes associated with these airlines you can benefit from more Avios that you can combine with the central scheme later on.

Robert Dyas is hoping to cash in on the double whammy of Father's Day and spring DIY fever, with an offer of 10% off when you spend 40%. It's valid until the end of June, and it is offering the discount through myvouchercodes.co.uk.

H&M, meanwhile, is offering 25% off all full-price items when you use the voucher in this week's Grazia Magazine. It's valid until next Tuesday. You only need to spend £4 to make it pay, because the magazine itself will set you back £1.

And you can get a Neal's Yard Power Berry Daily Moisturiser for free on the cover of InStyle magazine. Some supermarket own-brand sausages have trumped their pricier competitors in tests of meat content and value for money, a watchdog has found.

A study by consumer group Which? found that some of the cheapest own brands offer the same amount of meat as significantly more expensive names
Consumers are better off buying an 80p packet of Sainsbury's Basics pork sausages than a £2.40 packet of Richmond thick sausages because both offer the same 42% meat content, it said. Sainsbury's premium pork sausages are £2.99, costing 59p more than the Richmond variety but containing twice as much meat at 97%.

Within supermarket ranges, cheaper products are not always better value in terms of meat content, the study also shows. Asda Butcher's Selection British pork sausages cost 23p more per kg than Asda pork sausages but contain significantly more meat, at 72% and 56% respectively.

With beefburgers, the Birds Eye Original version cost £8.30 per kg and contains 77% meat but Tesco's quarter-pound beefburgers cost £6.12 per kg and contain 90% meat, Which? said.

According to food labelling guidelines, a pork sausage must contain at least 42% pork meat to be labelled as such and that a product described simply as sausage only needs to contain 32% pork, 26% chicken or 30% beef/lamb.

Sausages and bacon are the most popular meat products sold by retailers, with 74% of UK adults buying them, Which? said.

Four-fifths of people (79%) check ingredients and meat content on labelling, the consumer group said, but added that it is concerned that government proposals will weaken guidelines and decriminalise violations of food labelling rules.

"We want mislabelling to remain a criminal offence, even more so after the horsemeat scandal, so those responsible for misleading consumers can be held to account," Which? said.

Executive director Richard Lloyd said: "It's important that people know what they're getting so they can make an informed choice. In the wake of the horsemeat scandal, we want the Government to think again over their plans to decriminalise food labelling offences to help restore trust in the food industry."

The German discounter saw a 25.2% climb in sales in the four weeks up to 25 May, according to latest Nielsen sales data while Tesco, Morrisons and Asda all saw market share dips.

What's behind the Aldi sales surge - and how long will it last?
This is in spite of the unseasonably cold weather hitting demand for summer clothing and garden furniture as parts of Britain were covered in sleet and snow.

The uplift was boosted by more shoppers being tempted onto the high street in May, where consumer spending saw its fastest annual increase since September last year, showing a 1.3% uplift.

The rise in high street spending, together with a 1.3% annual increase in consumers turning to mail and telephone ordering, offset a small 0.2% year-on-year decline in online spending, according to the report, compiled for Visa by Markit.

The strongest year-on-year increases in consumer spending were recorded in the miscellaneous goods and services category, which includes trips to the hairdresser, personal effects such as jewellery and financial services such as insurance premiums. Hotels and restaurants saw the next biggest uplift, followed by the transport and communication sector.

The biggest annual drops were seen in the health and education and food, drink and tobacco sectors. Spending on clothing, household goods and recreation and culture were also down on the same period a year ago.

Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit, said the report adds "to a picture of an economy that is on the mend, but progress is frustratingly slow".

Mr Williamson said that growth is still being held back by the pressure on household budgets caused by high living costs and stagnant wages.

He continued: "However, the nicer weather enjoyed in recent days may lead to a welcome June bounce in pent-up summer-related spending and provide an extra boost to the economy."
Amazon's domination of the online shopping world has stepped up a gear, as it is thought to be taking on the food delivery market in the US.

But why is it taking this step, will it work, and can we expect it to come to the UK?

Groceries

Amazon has had a toe in this business for the past six years. It runs a company called Amazon Fresh in Seattle, delivering fresh food with a fleet of branded trucks. It has been busy developing and honing this service, which now features local products, more convenient delivery times, and the option to have your groceries delivered in a chilled tote bag.

Now Reuters has claimed that the company is planning to extend the service to California. It will start in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and sources expect the company to launch in 20 other cities in 2014 - including some outside the US.

The report claimed that Amazon planned to combine fresh food delivery with delivery of its other products. As The Guardian pointed out, while only 5% of shoppers in the US and the UK buy groceries online, they tend to be wealthier shoppers, so there's more potential to up-sell to them, and get consumers to use the service for non-grocery shopping too. This would enable Amazon to take control of the whole of the delivery side of the business, and get a foot in the door once a week.

Will it come to the UK?

Broad expansion isn't out of the question, after-all Amazon is a fast-growth company and investors have come to expect enormous growth in the business. Groceries are a huge market, and a slice of that market would do nicely.

Amazon's model so far has been to grow in the US and then expand to a developed market like the UK or Japan. A grocery delivery service could expand along similar lines.

However, the report claimed that the roll-out would depend on the success the company has in the first two cities. And to make matters even less certain, Amazon has not commented on the reports, so there is absolutely no guarantee that any of this will come to fruition.

Will it work?

If it does launch in the UK it will face stiff competition, as all the major supermarkets have now launched delivery services, and are investing heavily in developing them. With Asda working on same-day deliveries, and a host of supermarkets backing 'Click and Collect', it will face a fight to gain a foothold.

It will also face a hostile reception from those who are concerned it will impact local food shops in the same way it hit local booksellers. And there will be those who stand by a boycott of the store that many adopted when it emerged how little UK corporation tax the company pays.

The question is whether these concerns will outweigh the benefits of shopping with Amazon. But what do you think? Would you buy your groceries from Amazon? let us know in the comments.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Shoppers seeking out British food

Younger shoppers are driving an increase in the number of those seeking out British food, according to new figures.

Shoppers are almost one and half times more likely to "buy British" than they were six years ago, according to research from IGD ShopperVista, with younger buyers and families driving the growth.
The study found 78% of shoppers would now buy British food if it was available compared with 55% in 2007. The greatest increase has been among 18 to 24-year-olds, with 69% likely to buy British now compared with 36% six years ago.

More than three-quarters of shoppers with children (77%) said they would buy British produce while nearly eight in ten shoppers (78%) said British farmers deserve the "full support" of the public.
The poll coincides with the agricultural industry's annual Open Farm Sunday open day on June 9.

IGD chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch said: "Price is always a top factor for shoppers when walking round their local store or shopping online and deciding what to buy. They also want high-quality food, but the challenging economic situation over the last few years has forced them to scrutinise every penny they spend.

"The good news for British producers is that interest in food sourced in this country has never been higher - eight out of ten shoppers want to buy it. This is an excellent opportunity for local food producers, who clearly have the public's support. It is also a chance for food companies to emphasise the quality of their products."

Caroline Drummond, chief executive of Leaf (Linking Environment and Farming), which is organising Open Farm Sunday, said: "It is great to see that the British public's support for farmers has never been higher.

"British farmers have responded substantially to changing consumer requirements over the last ten years delivering quality food, enhancing the environment and building trust and confidence."
