The team at Moneymagpie.com and I have searched high and low for the best home office bargains to save you money. Below are all kinds of items to help you organise your home office on a tight budget.

Desks to suit any room and any budget

Take some time to find a desk that works well for you. If you’re short of space, there are lots of desks with fitted storage – and corner units that can save lots of space.

Best for price…

Tesco Direct has computer desks from £24.99 and plenty of choice if you’re on a really tight budget. There’s a good selection of desks for under £60 in various styles and sizes and some attractive desks for around the £70 mark. I like the Pearce Hideaway home office desk which has lots of storage and costs £69.99 (plus Clubcard points!). Alternatively, the Reno desk costs £44.99 and has far more leg room. Littlewoods and Argos are also worth a look if price is your only concern. Argos has desks starting from around £30 up to £200. Littlewoods has a smaller selection ranging from £10 to £305. With both stores the cheapest ones are pretty basic but could ne ideal if you want to cut costs.

With Littlewoods, you’re actually better off checking out the high-range selection because the cheapest desks it offers can probably be found elsewhere at a better price. If you’re in a hurry and need a desk now, Office Furniture Online has a selection of office desks available for free next-day delivery. Prices start at £39 for chairs and £48 for computer desks.

Best for style…

They're not the most practical solutions but desks at Next are very stylish. The tepee-shaped Tall Corner Desk for £115 is perfect if you have a laptop and want something that takes up very little room and looks great. Next also has a nice selection of glass desks including the Trestle Desk for £175

Best for storage…

Ikea has an impressive selection of computer workstations to choose from which will hold all your office equipment. The Mikael workstation is our pick of the bunch – it costs just £65 and has loads of room for all your bits and bobs, plus a magnetic whiteboard for those moments of inspiration. Alternatively, this Expedit desk/bookcase could be a good option if you only need a small working surface. If you only have a small office space but still need extra storage, a corner desk is probably best. The Atlanta beech workstation from Furnitureatwork has an overhead hutch to store files etc. and will fit in a corner to save room – plus it’s just £72 in the sale!

Websites that could save you money

Always keep an eye out for good deals. Here are two really useful sites that you should make a point of looking at regularly. Both sites list the very latest sale items and bargains:

My Deco Go to the ‘Shopping’ tab at the top and look under ‘Special Offers’ or select a room that you want to shop for. Then sort the results by price – choose low to high – and see what bargains are out there.

You can also use this website to plan your office visually. Upload a picture of your room then try out 3D furniture, paint, wallpaper, flooring and accessories. It’s such a clever way to get an idea of how a room will look before you buy anything.

Offer of the Day This website searches for sale items from various major retailers. Prices are updated eight times a day, so it’s great for finding new online bargains.

You don’t need to register to view the discounted items, but if you do sign up (which is free) you can set up a watchlist to follow the progress of products you’re interested in.

Bid on bargains

Don't forget about eBay, which has a separate section for home office furniture. There are desks, filing cabinets, chairs and bookshelves – so you could kit out your entire home office using eBay. Just remember that some items will be pick-up only, so do check where you’ll need to collect from.

Go Second-Hand

If a home office is only a temporary measure, it may be worthwhile renting office furniture instead of buying. There are quite a few renting sites out there including Loot.

There are offices being cleared out all the time, particularly at a time like this, when more companies are cutting back staff and even shutting down completely. Now's the time to take advantage and grab yourself some office furniture at really low prices.

Gumtree has a section covering office furniture. New ads are posted every day, so try and check regularly. We had a look ourselves and found one ad offering a long list of office items at great prices including office chairs for a tenner, a wooden cabinet for £20, a wooden desk for £25 and three bookshelves for £50.

City Furniture Clearance is also well worth checking out. The items are all second-hand hotel, restaurant and pub furniture so there are usually cabinets, conference chairs and desks available. There is also an auction section which occasionally features furniture suitable for an office.
