It is important when you are buying travel insurance to choose a policy which offers suitable cover for your holiday at a price you can afford.

Money saving tips

If you are planning to travel more than once a year you could save time and money by buying an annual policy rather than single trip each time. Having a annual policy gives you the peace of mind that you are covered every time you travel.

Don’t waste money by insuring yourself twice. If your personal effects are covered by another policy eg. home content, you may be able to exclude Baggage Cover.

Check the excess amount. All policies will have a standard excess payment which they require you to pay in the event of making a claim, this can vary from £50 to £150. An excess waiver may be available for a small additional premium so that you do not have to pay anything in the event of a claim.

Choosing the right cover for your holiday

When taking out travel insurance don’t just compare prices, compare the benefits and cover as well. Different products offer different levels of cover. Check which policy most suits you and your holiday ie., single trip, annual, winter sports, backpackers, business or golf.

Buy your travel insurance as soon as possible after you have booked your holiday to safeguard against cancellation.

Ensure that the cancellation cover is sufficient to cover the cost of the trip. Check that the policy provides a 24 hour international helpline number to provide support in the event of a medical emergency.

Check and understand the medical cover, does it cover you for repatriation? Always declare any pre-existing medical conditions or you may not be covered under the policy.

Ensure that the policy provides cover for any hazardous activities or sports you may want to participate in whilst you are away. If you are taking a winter sports holiday check what activities are covered.

Check the limits of cover for any expensive items you are taking away.

Always keep money and other valuable items on your person or in a safe to ensure they will be covered by your travel insurance. Valuables such as cameras may not be covered if they have been left unattended or put in your checked-in baggage when flying. Check the full policy wording for details.

If you like to book your holiday independently, look for travel insurance that provides cover against insolvency. Holidays booked independently, rather than through a travel agent or tour operator, are unlikely to be covered by ABTA or ATOL protection, meaning that if a company were to become insolvent you wouldn’t be able to get your money back. Some travel insurance policies are now including cover for this type of situation.

Insurance Guides and Tools

Always read the full policy wording carefully when you buy travel insurance to understand what is or isn’t covered and what may be required in the event of a claim.

Most travel insurance providers offer a full refund within 14 days of purchasing a policy if it does not meet your requirements.
