Remember, remember insurance in November
- Instant home insurance quotes
As the 5th of November draws near plans for bonfire and firework festivities are 'hotting up' around the UK. Every year there is a huge spark of concern for homeowners that their home could end up in flames.
Anyone who intends to celebrate is encouraged to acknowledge personal safety precautions and measures to prevent damage to properties.
Each year people are hurt and insurance companies receive hundreds of claims for damages, such a damaged roof tiles, broken windows or burnt garden fences, as a result of a rogue rocket or bonfire sparks.
First and foremost, before setting light, homeowners should check their home insurance covers damage to their own property, their neighbours' houses and any injury to a guest. Most home insurance policies will provide cover against mishaps, but do not take it for granted that you will be covered.
Your home building insurance should cover the damage to the house itself and your land, while home contents insurance covers free standing items both in the house and outside in the garden.
Check whether you have accidental damage included with your policy, which should cover damage caused by fire to anything in your or your neighbour's garden.
If you are hosting a bonfire party, make sure you check you have personal liability cover. Most home insurance policies include this as standard up to the value of £1m. This will cover claims made against you by your guests or your neighbours if they are injured or their property is damaged.
Anyone who lives in a non standard property such as house with a thatched roof, there may be restrictions on the level of cover you have so check with your insurer.
Besides the risk of fire and personal injury, there is a high risk of burglary around 5th November.
Homeowners, whether they are the host or guest at a party, should pay particular attention to securing their home. The distraction of fireworks gives burglars the perfect opportunity to strike.
When you go out on bonfire night, leave the lights on and windows closed with curtains drawn. For additional effect, leave the television or radio on. Make sure you lock all doors, shut all windows and activate the burglar alarm.
