But is it really art?
The Angel of the North, Anthony Gormley's masterpiece, has been sold to a mystery telephone bidder at auction for £2m.
It might fit in the buyer's garden too as it was in fact just the life-size model used to build the 20 meter giant at Gateshead.
In another record-breaking Sotheby's auction, 11 artists hit new highs as over £94 million of art went under the hammer, making it the most successful summer sale of contemporary art ever held in Europe. In a room filled to capacity, many of the lots offered soared beyond expectations, with two thirds of the works sold achieving prices in excess of their high estimate.
Top price was paid for a Francis Bacon while Andy Warhol's Portrait of John McEnroe and Tatum O'Neal, donated by the ex tennis player raised £241,250 for the charity Habitat for Humanity.
Have a look at our gallery of the lots offered and the amazing prices which include the Buyers Premium (but not the VAT!)
