British Gas drops prices
Amid news of record oil prices and the threat of further home energy price hikes, British Gas has quietly reduced the price of electricity for its internet only tariff.
The price drop which took effect 8 May saw British Gas cut the cost of electricity by an average of 4.5% for its Click Energy 5 tariff. Some customers in Wales saw prices go down by as much as 12%.
British Gas’s price drop now makes Click Energy 5 the cheapest tariff available in most regions for average users. British Gas says the price cuts will take effect immediately for existing Click Energy 5 customers and all new signups.
"This is welcome news" said Florian Ritzmann of price comparison site Unravelit.com. "After double digit price increases from all suppliers, it’s good to see British Gas take the initiative and bring down the cost of Click Energy 5. This price cut has now put British Gas at the top of the rankings which is what it was designed to do.”
Click Energy 5 is British Gas’s cheapest home energy tariff and is available by online and broker signup. Customers must manage their account online and can provide meter readings through the British Gas website.
Customers already with British Gas on their Standard rates can still sign up to Click Energy and could reduce their bills by as much as £200 depending on how they pay their bills.
"At a time where prices are at record highs, it makes sense to make sure we’re paying as little as possible for our home energy” concluded Ritzmann. "Although we’d like to see prices at much more affordable levels, this is a small move in the right direction."
*Calculations in this article are based on average annual gas consumption of 20500 kW/h and annual electricity consumption of 3300 kW/h.
